October 5, 2021 — My name is Jarvell Williams, and I am currently a graduate student at Marquette University as a Trinity Fellow in the Public Service program. I aim to work within the performing arts nonprofit space where I am looking to center my work on Social Justice advocacy with theatre education. I believe that theatre has the power to teach and encourage systemic change through elements of performance. My goal is to develop an arts education program where community engagement meets theatre performance.
I am grateful to begin my service with the Milwaukee Community Justice Council as the Racial Equity Coordinator. I am passionate about restorative justice and re-entry efforts to reduce recidivism in jails and the criminal justice system. I primarily focus on critical race theory and efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion missions towards themes of multiculturalism and collective investment. My beliefs stem from experiences in foster care and living in poverty most of my life as a black man in some of Chicago’s most marginalized neighborhoods. Thus, my identity is critical to how I view work at the CJC and beyond, significantly impacting the lens I use to examine the disparities focused on during the work.
Among my personal life, I enjoy traveling and exploring new cities. For my first time in South America, I have recently visited Bogota, Colombia, and can not wait to continue my adventures there. My favorite cities so far have been New Orleans, Florence, and Bangkok. Depending on current regulations, I plan to visit Japan this winter, but I am excited to see a few places in Eastern Europe. I am also a huge foodie and love blogging about different food during my travels and learning to prepare them for when I return home. My favorite cuisines I’ve learned to prepare are Filipino and Nigerian. I often fuse many in experimental dishes, creating an even better experience than before.
I again am grateful to join the Milwaukee Community Justice Council and am awaiting new adventures to unfold as time unravels itself with each passing day.
