On Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 2:15 p.m. the first in-street yield to pedestrian signs will be installed at the intersection of Lenox and Kinnickinnic Ave.
Anyone interested in attending is welcome. In the coming week the remainder of the 15 signs will be posted along KK and Howell. KK and Howell will only be the third and fourth streets in the entire city to have such signs that are designed to increase pedestrian safety. Brady street was the first to have these signs on a pilot program basis. Since that time one was added to Downer. These signs have proven to be extremely effective in both Milwaukee and Whitefish Bay. For example, the findings showed thatprior to installing signs, the yield compliance rates ranged from 4-8 percent, depending on the intersection. After the signs were installed the compliance rates increased to 12-26 percent the first year and went up to 34-43 percent the second year. Those kinds of increases show these signs to be an incredible value in the fight to improve pedestrian safety.
