NEWS FROM THE MAYOR
UWM School of Public Health Moves Forward
The University of Wisconsin System’s Board of Regents today unanimously approved a plan to establish an accredited School of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
I have been fighting for a School of Public Health at UWM for years, and I applaud this great news. Milwaukee faces many unique health challenges simply not found in the rest of the state, and a School of Public Health right here in Milwaukee will focus energy and resources on the special needs of our City.
This institution will educate and replenish our public health workforce, and research the causes of and solutions to public health problems. It will also focus debate and media attention on critical health issues within the unique context of Milwaukee – an outstanding ‘learning laboratory’ for current and future public health professionals.
While academic public health programs alone cannot solve complex urban health problems, a School of Public Health at UWM will provide enormous benefits and advantages for the people of our community. It will promote actions and policies that will help people lead healthier lives, and play a major role in the campaign to eliminate social, economic and racial health disparities.
Today’s decision is the right move for Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the UW System. Special thanks are owed to philanthropist Joe Zilber, whose generous gift of $10 million helped make this school possible, and the Board of Regents for its visionary decision. I urge the State Legislature to approve the School of Public Health at UW-Milwaukee.
2007 Mayor’s Urban Design Awards
Last week, I presented 27 architecture projects in Milwaukee with a Mayor’s Urban Design Award. The awards recognize excellence in urban design, like the Amtrak Intermodal Station renovation (below), which earned a Best Face Forward accolade.
Award recipients all feature unique and innovative designs that complement Milwaukee’s tapestry of neighborhoods, and make our City an exciting and beautiful place for businesses, visitors and residents. The Mayor’s Urban Design Awards include many categories, including an emphasis on my commitment to green design and conversion of underused buildings.
This year marked the 11th annual Mayor’s Urban Design Award ceremony, which has recognized 177 projects since 1997 for exceptional design, façade improvements, landscaping and even signage.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters Needs Volunteers – Get Involved Today!
We often look at our city’s issues on a macro level, but I love being involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee because it addresses community needs on an individual level.
As a Big Brothers, Big Sisters board member, I know that connecting one child in need to an adult mentor willing to give a few hours a month can make a huge difference. That special relationship can build understanding across geographic, cultural and socioeconomic lines. It can also play a huge role in creating hope in the lives of young people in our community.
But we need more volunteers, especially men. Today, they are nearly 1,000 children on the Big Brothers Big Sisters waiting list, and connecting those kids to positive role models will certainly create lasting change.
You can make a difference in the life of young person in Milwaukee, like 8-year-old Jaquain, a “little” who likes to play football and go bowling with his “big.”
