Thanks in large part to Ald. Zielinski's resolution, 40 additional police officers will be patrolling Milwaukee neighborhoods.
Legislation sponsored by Ald. Zielinski led to the full Common Council voting earlier this year to add a total of 40 recruits to two police classes this fall. A second measure – also supported by the alderman – added funding for additional police overtime. A total of $1.5 million from a special police account will pay for both measures.
"I've been trying to get more cops on the street for some time, and I'm pleased that the Council agreed with me that we need and can certainly use additional police officers," said Ald. Zielinski.
"We need additional officers on the streets to make a difference in the quality of life in this city and to make our streets and neighborhoods safe for our families and children," he said.
Also in recent Council action, Ald. Zielinski voted to:
- Go ahead with hiring 13 retired officers as full- and part-time civilian investigators or Police Service Specialist Investigators (PSSIs) to run background checks on police applicants to free police officers for routine street patrol.
