MAYOR BARRETT: MANPOWER TO GROW DOWNTOWN
CITY TO ASSIST IN RELOCATION, EXPANSION

Milwaukee, WI -- Mayor Tom Barrett announced today that Manpower, Inc. will move and grow its world headquarters in downtown Milwaukee. The re-location would bring 900 jobs into the city and position the company to potentially add as many as 300 new jobs to their corporate offices in the near future. The proposed site of the new facility would be constructed just north of the Time Warner headquarters, along the Milwaukee River south of Cherry Street.

"I am proud to welcome another world leader and Fortune 500 company to the thriving downtown of Milwaukee," said Mayor Barrett. "This is an opportunity to help Manpower grow and prosper, just as its move will make a tremendous economic impact upon our neighborhoods and city. Manpower is a leader in workforce development and has a commitment to moving people forward with job skills, training and mentoring. I believe the company's move will be a boon for Milwaukee residents."

The site of the future Manpower, Inc. world headquarters will be redeveloped to include new construction, a parking structure and a public plaza opening onto what will be another extension of the Milwaukee Riverwalk. Development will also include historic renovation of the North Powerhouse on the site. In total the project will cost $87 million. The site is currently within a tax incremental financing district, which Mayor Barrett proposes amending to help finance the public infrastructure associated with the project.  In total, city assistance will total $25 million, with the funds being repaid by the TIF over time.

"We are excited about this opportunity to welcome the company to grow in Milwaukee and grow our economy," said Common Council President Willie Hines, Jr.  "Our residents will better connect with Manpower's services and job training when it is centrally located."

The proposal to use the tax incremental financing tool to help prepare the site for the relocation will require approval by the Redevelopment Authority, Common Council and Joint Review Board.

Mayor Barrett said use of the economic development tool, TIF financing, will create waves of economic impact throughout the city as a sizeable workforce will eat, shop and recreate in the neighborhoods.

"I look forward to welcoming Manpower's employees to all of the exciting attractions, restaurants, shopping and neighborhoods of Milwaukee," said Mayor Barrett. "They're going to love working here."

Third District Alderman Michael D'Amato said he expects Manpower employees will want to live closer to work and all of the attractions of Milwaukee.
