Mayor Barrett and Executive Director of Election Commission Call on Citizens to Work Election Day

Milwaukee -- Mayor Tom Barrett and the Executive Director of the Election Commission are calling on Milwaukee citizens to help on election day.  Mayor Barrett and Lisa A. Artison announced today the City is looking for nine election chiefs, 115 poll workers and 143 registrars.  "We are not overly concerned about the fact that we are still looking for citizens to help but we want to have those workers lined up to make sure we have a fair election," stated Mayor Barrett.

The Milwaukee Election Commission is also looking for volunteers to serve as greeters at polling sites on election day.  "We are working with community organizations and businesses to find those volunteers," stated Artison.  The Election Commission is also recruiting additional Spanish and Hmong speaking poll workers to address the needs of these rapidly growing segments of the community.

Wisconsin state law does not require people to bring proof of identification and residency to the polls but with voter turnout expected to reach 75%, Mayor Barrett and Artison are encouraging people to bring identification to help prevent any potential problems.  The Election Commission and workers at the polls will report any suspicious activity or possible voter fraud to the authorities and Milwaukee County District Attorney's office.  The Commission is also adding more field supervisors and technicians to help detect problem areas at polling places.

So far, more than 14,000 absentee ballots requests have been processed.  That's almost double the number of absentee ballots processed in the last Presidential election.

A list of polling location changes, documents you should bring to the polls and an example of how to fill out an on-site registration card, will be available soon. Please check back for more information.
