Norovirus Investigation
The City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has received reports of two recent clusters of norovirus infection within institutional settings. Noroviruses are a category of viruses that result in acute gastrointestinal illness that generally resolves in 2-3 days. The viruses are highly contagious and are easily transmitted in group settings as a result of poor hand washing and hygiene. Norovirus outbreaks have also been linked to contaminated food and water sources.  Click here to read the full press release.

Protect Your Family - Immunize!
Children benefit from immunizations by having a much greater chance at avoiding terrible childhood diseases like polio or mumps.  For more information on how you can set up an appointment to immunize your child, see our immunization web page.  For timely information about specific vaccines, click on the links below.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA)
Much has been heard in the news recently about public outbreaks of the S. aureus bacteria which is resistant to a number of antibiotics, making it difficult to treat.  This infection usually occurs in health care settings with patients suffering depressed immune systems, but began to show up in healthy individuals in the mid- to late-1990's.  There is currently no report of an S. aureus outbreak among otherwise healthy individuals here in Milwaukee, but it is a good idea to get educated on ways of reducing your chance of getting it.
