Ald. Coggs celebrated the 40th anniversary of Milwaukee’s Fair Housing Law with former Ald. Vel Phillips. The Fair Housing Law was passed on a unanimous vote of the Common Council on April 30, 1968. The law initially outlawed racial discrimination in the purchase of real estate and has since been expanded to include all protected classes.
Aldermen present at the anniversary event included Nik Kovac (3rd District), Ashanti Hamilton (1st District), Council President Willie L. Hines, Jr. (15th District), former Alderwoman Vel Phillips, Milele A. Coggs (6th District), Michael Murphy (10th District) and State Senator Spencer Coggs.
