Seal Coating for Streets Starts Mid-June
Seal Coating for Streets Starts Mid-June
The Department of Public Works (DPW) will be undertaking seal coating operations in specific areas of the 5th Aldermanic District
beginning approximately during the third week of June
. Below is a list of the streets in the district that are included in the 2009 seal coating contract.
The type of seal coating being used is called a “Slurry Seal” -- a combination of asphalt emulsion, aggregates and filler materials that produces a liquid type mixture that is evenly spread over the entire roadway surface using special equipment. The average thickness will be about ¼ inch. The advantage to this type of seal coating is that there are no aggregates placed on top of the slurry material that can be displaced on lawns, driveways and sidewalks. The only disadvantage is that the “Slurry Seal” takes approximately three to five hours to dry adequately before allowing vehicular traffic to drive on it.
It will take three to six days to complete all the streets listed below in the 5
th
District. Naturally, weather conditions will play an important role in this project and delays can be expected with rain or inclement weather. Individual streets will be inconvenienced for at most, one day.
The seal coating operations normally take place between 6:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. At least two days in advance of any seal coating in front of any home, “NO PARKING” signs will be posted and windshield cards will be placed on cars parked along the streets. On the day a street is scheduled for seal coating, it will be swept clean with a power broom, manholes and sewer structures will be covered and any remaining holes will be patched. The “Slurry Seal” will be spread on the pavement and will be allowed to dry to the satisfaction of the city inspectors and the contractor.
An important point to understand in this process is that once the “Slurry Seal” process has commenced, vehicular access will not be allowed on that street.
Therefore, any vehicles that residents will be using that day will need to be removed from their garages and/or driveways. After it has dried sufficiently, then and only then will residents will be allowed to drive on the newly sealed pavement. If needed, residents will be allowed to park their vehicles overnight on the abutting streets that are not being sealed that day.
Affected residents are being asked to please comply with all “NO PARKING” signs associated with the project. If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact Mr. Ron Golec at 286-5533 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
