The First Solar Powered Residential Development In The State Right Here in Bay View!
In the next few months, requests for proposals (RFPs) will go out regarding the Army Reserve development area in Bay View. The land, bound by Logan Ave. on the west, Bay St. on the east, Conway St. on the south and Lincoln Ave. on the north, was leased to the U.S. Army, but now that they are leaving the site, many have been providing input on what the area could be used for.
Ald. Zielinski has proposed residential housing for this area and that it becomes the first solar powered residential development in the state and the proposal has been met with great enthusiasm. The negative effects high gas prices are having on our economy and the cost to our environment fuel consumption creates make it critical to promote renewable energy at every turn. Residential properties will also add to the positive support for the proposed Kenosha-Racine-Milwaukee commuter rail stop in the area.
Solar Energy Made Simple
Ald. Zielinski is proud to announce that Milwaukee has earned the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar America Cities 2008 grant. The grant includes training for solar panel installers and also provides funds to make more residents aware of how solar technologies work to increase efficiency and save costs.
“This grant provides excellent leverage for environmental action that will set the example for cities across the United States,” he said. Milwaukee is one of 12 cities selected for this grant in 2008 and the results of this project will be shared across the country.
Ald. Zielinski said Milwaukee will be setting the example for sustainability and efficiency in energy options. “Combined with the support we’ve received from project partners We Energies and Focus on Energy, this can become a large scale project with great impact on our community,” he said.
The initial report on the project will be released this fall.
