Youth Prepare For Future With City Help

The 2006 Summer Youth Internship Program in Milwaukee was a tremendous success, with the city, state and private sector chipping in to provide jobs for high school juniors and seniors. "I'm happy to support this program which provides employment opportunities that help our youth develop the skills they'll need in the working world," said Ald. Wade. "If my colleagues on the Common Council will support me with another allocation of Community Development Block Grant funds for the program, we will continue it in 2007."

This was the second year for the Summer Youth Internship Program in Milwaukee, and the city created 214 jobs to give students the chance to experience careers in city government. City internships were developed in many departments, including public works, forestry, health, marketing, customer service, neighborhood planning and communication.

The young people worked 20 hours per week for eight weeks, and were paid $7.13 per hour. All youth interns must live within the CDBG target areas. The program includes "Education Fridays" at Marquette University where the students work on resume writing, interviewing techniques and workplace behavior.
