Goodwill Opens Workforce Connection Center

On February 11, at 3903 N. Richards Street off of east Capitol Drive the ribbon was cut, opening the first Goodwill Industries Workforce Connection Center in Milwaukee County. Green Bay Packer Wide Receiver Donald Driver, who is a spokesperson for Goodwill, was on hand for the grand opening activities. He gave away autographed copies of his book, Zippy Makes the Team. Driver was joined by local and state elected officials including County Supervisors John Thomas and Willie Johnson, Mequon’s State Representative Jim Ott, and Mayor Tom Barrett.

Goodwill Workforce Connection Centers help people find employment and job-related support services for FREE. No referral is needed. Anyone is welcome to access their computers, printers, internet, telephones, and fax machines. Full-time Goodwill staff are available to provide assistance and guidance through the skills assessment and job search process. The center helps with access to support services like transportation, child care, and literacy resources. The center also offers targeted services to employers, including weekly on-site job fairs.

The Workforce Connection Center on Richards Street is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. You can reach them at 962-4148. CLICK HERE for a downloadable PDF of the Workforce Connection Center flyer.

County Board Finance & Audit Committee Public Hearings on 2009 County Budget

Four meetings held throughout Milwaukee County in September.

As Vice Chair of the County Board’s Committee on Finance and Audit, I was honored that Supervisor Elizabeth M. Coggs, the Committee Chair, chose the 18th District to host one of four public hearings on the 2009 County Budget.  The questions and concerns from the community were well received by those Supervisors in attendance at the Granville Senior Center.  Supervisors Toni M. Clark, Willie Johnson, Jr., Michael Mayo, Sr., and Joseph Rice, who represent the surrounding districts, joined me at the public hearing.

I appreciated the opportunity to engage the 18th district constituents on their concern on the upcoming 2009 budget.  I feel that it is important to give the community an opportunity to direct their elected officials on the services and the policies that are important to them.  I would like to assure the Milwaukee County citizens that the County Board will give ample consideration to their input during the budget process this fall.
