Traffic Calming Devices

Can Put The Brakes On Speeding Vehicles

Many residents in the 5th District have expressed their concerns to Ald. Bohl about speeding in their neighborhoods. The alderman has taken a number of steps to slow traffic and improve safety for pedestrians. But Ald. Bohl would like residents to know that there is now another option in which they can ask the city to construct a device, such as a "bump out" or a "speed hump" to reduce speeds on residential streets.

The Milwaukee Common Council in December passed a measure which Ald. Bohl co-sponsored that will allow "traffic-calming" devices, such as speed humps or bump outs, to be installed in their neighborhoods.

Under the plan, residents could petition the city for a traffic calming device. The Department of Public Works will work with those neighbors to determine the most appropriate measure for their neighborhood. If approved following a public hearing, 90% of the cost would be divided among adjoining property owners along the block as a special assessment (similar to the process the city uses for street, sidewalk and alley replacement). A typical speed hump would cost about $3,000 and other traffic calming devices will cost slightly more.

"People want safer streets and this ordinance empowers local residents to improve their quality of life by gaining control of busy and dangerous streets," said Ald. Bohl.

If you and your neighbors are interested in looking into some type of traffic calming device, please call Ald. Bohl's office or contact Dave Schlabowske by email at dschla@mpw.net or by calling 286-3144.
