Tobacco Control Program

Every day, 1,200 Americans die from smoking-related illnesses. This number represents more American lives than the combined daily total of alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs. Ironically, smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. The Milwaukee Health Department's Tobacco Control Program assures and promotes community initiatives to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with tobacco use, and improves the health status of the Milwaukee community.

What services does the Tobacco Control Program provide?

  • Youth-led, adult-guided community programs to prevent the initiation of tobacco use for youth.
  • Chronic disease prevention programs to reduce the burden of tobacco
  • Smoking cessation programs
  • Reduction of youth access to tobacco
  • School-based, school-linked programs
  • Participation in statewide programs
  • Surveillance and evaluation
