The Behavioral Health Division provides care and treatment to developmentally, emotionally and mentally ill adults, children and adolescents through both County-operated programs and contracts with community agencies. Services include intensive short-term treatment through our crisis services and inpatient services. Long-term inpatient care is available through the Division's nursing home programs.

 

The Division provides a full array of supportive community services for persons with serious mental illness and alcohol and other drug abuse services to the community.

 

The Community Services Branch provides or contracts to provide all those community-based services offered by the Behavioral Health Division. Access to these programs begins with the Service Access to the Independent Living Unit (SAIL), which is our centralized intake assessment unit.

To help adults with mental illness achieve the greatest possible independence and quality of life, the Service Access to Independent Living unit (SAIL) assesses individual needs and facilitates access to community services and supports. WIser Choice Program – Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA)

 

This program serves individuals whose life has been affected by alcohol or other drug use. Access to treatment may be obtained by visiting one of the Central Intake Units. The Central Intake Units determine eligibility for funding and refer individuals (ages 18-59) for treatment. Substance use treatment is provided to eligible individuals by a network of agencies on a fee-for-service basis. Services for families are also available through the Milwaukee AODA/TANF Services System.

 

The Milwaukee AODA/TANF Services System is a new way for people to access and use treatment services. The system was specifically designed to eliminate barriers to successful treatment identified by local providers, consumers and advocates. The new system is funded by a grant from the State of Wisconsin Bureau of Substance Abuse Services. The Center for Addiction and Behavioral Health research at UW-M is conducting the evaluation. Project M.A.T.E. (Project Milwaukee County AODA/TANF Evaluation) will include evaluation of outcomes the individual as well as system level so we are able to learn more about what treatment approaches work best in our community.

AODA Services Provided:

Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) Central Intake Units (CIU)

 

The Central Intake Units assist individuals seeking substance abuse treatment. At the Central Intake Units the staff will determine eligibility for funding. Eligibility includes residency (must be a resident of Milwaukee County) and age (must be between the ages of 18 and 59). When individuals are found to be eligible and appropriate for services, a referral is made to the treatment provider of choice. Treatment is provided by a network of agencies on a fee-for-service basis.

There are a limited number of screens performed daily.  Clients are generally served on a first come, first served basis. Not all Milwaukee County residents are eligible for the WIser Choice / ATR Program.
