Project Staying Alive

 

                            

Project Staying Alive is a Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) program in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and Project Ujima. The program is designed to educate sixth-grade students on proper anger-management techniques. We believe that by educating these students on how to deal with anger, it will help reduce incidences of violent injury in the City of Milwaukee.

Project Staying Alive is modeled after the highly successful MFD Survive Alive Program. Project Staying Alive contains five, 90-minute sessions with a class size of 20-40 students. Milwaukee Fire Department personnel and MPS teachers teach the sessions. The program is part of a Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant initiative. Due to the initiative, Project Staying Alive is at no cost to schools within the grant authority. All training, education, supplies and equipment are paid by the grant.

Development of the Project Staying Alive program has been supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, MPS Superintendent William Andrekopoulos, MFD Fire Chief Douglas Holton, and oversight boards within both Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
