The Milwaukee Fire Department Receives Fire Safety Education Award from WI Alliance of Fire Safety
The world-class department is recognized for its success in fire safety education and fire safety accomplishments

Milwaukee—(September 25, 2008)—The Wisconsin Alliance for Fire Safety (WAFS) has awarded the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) with its Fire Safety Education Award. The WAFS will honor the Department, October 7, during Fire Prevention Week, at its 18th Annual Fire Safety Recognition Program. The program, located at the O’Donnell Park-Harbor Lights Room, will be a luncheon followed by the Fire Safety Awards presentation, and lastly, a guest speaker.

“One of MFD primary goals is to educate the community on fire safety and prevention…an effort headed by our Community Relations Department,” said MFD Fire Chief Douglas A. Holton. “The department continues to be committed to community outreach and serving Milwaukee citizens to help decrease and eliminate fire loss to life and property.”

The MFD Community Relations Department offers 21 programs that reach people of all ages, races and genders within the Greater Milwaukee Community. Some of those programs apprise youth about fire safety and helps them become aware of the tactics and techniques to survive a working fire. Milwaukee has not had any fire fatalities among children in 2007 or 2008—an accomplishment that has not been reached in 25 years.

“The Milwaukee Fire Department excels in fire prevention education and promotion,” said Mary Gengler, executive director for WAFS. “We are very pleased to honor the Department for all their educational work in fire and burn safety throughout the year.”
