One of the most important duties performed by the City Treasurer is the investment of city funds not needed immediately to meet current expenditures.
Under Wisconsin State Statutes and the Milwaukee City Charter, Code of Ordinances, and Common Council Resolutions, the City Treasurer is responsible for investing available City fund balances. These balances consist of property taxes collected and other revenues received, including Wisconsin State shared revenue and aid payments, as well as various fines and fees. Since the City's cash flow requirements do not always equal the current fund balance, the City Treasurer invests any funds not needed immediately to meet current expenditures. In making investment decisions, the City Treasurer considers the safety, liquidity, and rate of return of the various investment instruments authorized under Wisconsin State Statutes.
In 2007, The City Treasurer realized City General Fund investment revenue of $8.3 million. The investment revenue realized reduces the amount of the property tax levy.
