Residents of the Hartung Quarry neighborhood and Ald. Bohl have worked for several years to develop a plan for the 16-acre landfill that is in both the City of Milwaukee and the City of Wauwatosa, and with the cooperation of citizens and government officials in the two municipalities, Hartung Park is moving forward.
Plans for the quarry/park, located on land south of W. Keefe Ave. between N. 99th St. and the Menomonee River Parkway, call for a phased development. Pictured above is a segment of the Hartung Quarry Park conceptual development plan for phase one, located on the western portion of the site along the parkway and W. Keefe Ave. Phase one includes multi-purpose play areas, nature trails, a rain garden demonstration and natural amphitheater.
"A DNR stewardship grant the city is applying for is expected to help pay for a significant portion of phase one improvements at the park, and work on phase one is expected to begin in spring 2008," Ald. Bohl said. While being developed as a passive-recreation public park, phase two is expected to include approximately 10 single-family homes on the eastern perimeter of the site. "Neighbors have been very active in the planning process and are excited with the progress we're making," the alderman said.
Hartung Quarry has been used as a City of Milwaukee landfill since 1964, and is expected to reach its capacity this year. If you have questions, log on to the Hartung Park Community Association web site at www.hartungpark.com or contact Ald. Bohl's office.
